Today was my first read aloud observation and I chose to read Where the Wild Things Are. Overall, I think it went pretty well, but it was challenging to initially organize the students on the carpet. They were in the middle of centers, so this caused a chaotic start to the lesson. However, I was able to grab their attention with the cover of the book because they were fascinated by the wild things, which were also called "gorillas" and "bulls." The biggest issue I found when trying to read the story was two children who were not cooperating and were having a challenging day with their behavior. This caused the class to get off-task at times, but I was able to eliminate distractions (water bottles) as much as possible. The class was very engaged and interested in the story, and they did an excellent job in the reading response activity when we discussed the beginning, middle, and end. I would like to work on my classroom management skills in order to help every student stay focused during the lesson. I am proud of my enthusiasm, strategies for student engagement, and vocabulary enrichment activities!
