I chose my focus student because my teacher said she struggles with confidence and frequently breaks down crying when she reads. While in the classroom today, I took many inquiry notes about my focus student. I have a wondering about what factors are causing her to struggle in reading and writing. During our read aloud, my student was having trouble sitting still. She stood up every minute, even when she was told to sit down numerous times. She was having difficulty taking notes during the read aloud and would continuously come over and show me the notes she was taking. This demand for attention is something that I found very interesting and I want to learn more about this. I pulled her aside and asked a few questions about her culture. When I asked what holidays she celebrated, she said she celebrates Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. My teacher said she used to go to church, but she does not go anymore. I may need more information about her culture before I am able to make any conclusions, but I think the most interesting fact about her is that she has three brothers and one sister. This large family can be a factor in her constant need for attention, because she may not be getting this attention at home.
