After reading chapter 2 in Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Educaton by Paul C. Gorski and Seema G. Pothini, I was able to understand the term equity literacy. This means that we, as teachers, need to look at the dynamics related to race, gender, identity, or other issues and look at them as a part of bigger social and cultural conditions. If a student is not reading at home, his teacher should not try to communicate with the parents that reading is very important in our culture, because they most likely already have those values as well. Instead, this student that is from a low-income family may be struggling with many other challenges. The understanding that there is something deeper is what will help us become better teachers. This concept will be very helpful in my internship because I have many students from different cultures, and I would like to challenge myself to look deeper into their other conditions in order to fully understand their situation.
