A "Surprise" Fire Drill Case Study

I read the "Surprise" Fire Drill Case Study and found myself a little torn on both sides while reading this case.

1) I was able to understand each side of this issue, but I must say that I agree more with Ms. Stintson, who is concerned primarily about how a fire drill might traumatize Aiden. She has specific requests from Aiden's parents to help him through this because he does not like loud noises, so I think every teacher should listen to these parents' requests, when it comes to his safety and well being.

2) I think it may be difficult to have a compromise in this case, because both teachers believe very strongly about this. However, for an alternative compromise, I would have suggested Ms. Stinston to come into the room a few minutes before the fire drill, and pull Aiden aside to explain to him that once the loud noise goes off, she will immediately put the headphones on him to protect his ears. She will stay in the room and do as she has told Aiden, so he only hears that loud sound for a very short second.

3) Ms. Stintson is the special education teacher and has the right to advocate for Aiden. She has the option to go to the principal and discuss this problem with him. She also has the option to call Aiden's parents and have Ms. Foster in the room as well so she can hear this news directly from his parents. These are the options I would take to advocate for Aiden because he deserves to have these accommodations.
