Case 11.2: I'm Not Black

1. Ms. Lee should have taken a few factors into consideration before selecting Warren as a mentor for Abiola. She should have first observed the relationship between these two students immediately when the new student came in. She then should have asked Warren if it he was comfortable mentoring him. He was taken by surprise when Ms. Lee asked him, so it made the situation uncomfortable. She should have also considered discussing this diversity in the classroom before asking for mentors for Abiola.

2. Ms. Lee should have addressed Warren's concerns by having a discussion the next day in class with the entire class about diversity. Everyone comes from a different background, and she should have taken that approach instead of thinking everyone was the same. If students discussed ways to be respectful to each other, it would have possibly solved the problem. Ms. Lee could also have helped Abiola feel more welcome by learning about his culture and informing students about it as well.

Case 4.3: A Difference in Perspectives

1. I don't think Mr. Ortiz's suggestion for Nikhil to wear the charm at home was a fair compromise. He was just trying to eliminate the argument, but I agree with Nikhil when he said that it is a symbol that he wants to wear to honor his family. Telling him that he is not able to wear it at school is unfair because others are able to wear cross necklaces and other symbols. He should be able to wear what he wants, but I think Mr. Ortiz needs to take a lot of time to inform his students and have discussions to eliminate some of the discomfort within the classroom.

3. If I were Mr. Ortiz with limited time, I would have all the students write their concerns or questions on a piece of paper without their name on it. This helps the teacher see what needs to be discussed in class and how many students are uncomfortable about certain things. A discussion about the most asked questions and concerns can help students talk to each other in a respectful manner and learn more about these controversial topics.
