I teach small groups during centers based on Words Their Way word pattern sorting. Ashlyn observed this small group instruction and wrote very helpful notes. She said I did a great job with questioning and prompting students with thinking questions. I asked them to dig deeper into their thinking by asking "how did you know that?" or "why do you think that?" She also said I did a good job by sounding out the word slowly for them as they were trying to spell it. I "bubble gummed" the word for them, which separates the word into phonemes to help spelling. She also pointed out that I discussed multiple meanings of certain words that may be tricky for them. This observation was helpful because she let me know what I was doing that was effective to help me become more confident in my abilities to teach these word patterns!
