I enjoyed reading Ana Maria Villegas and Tamara Lucas' article that explained the importance of seeing all of our culturally diverse students as capable learners. I think this article connects to the Boys and Girls Club extremely well because I realized on the first day that these students all have a very different culture than I grew up around. The article states that teachers should not just research information about that culture, but sit down with those students and ask them questions about their favorite activities, subjects, any concerns they have, and so on. This goes hand in hand with our differentiated lesson plan assignment, as well. I downloaded a template from Teachers Pay Teachers that I plan to use next week to get to know my students a little better (there is two pages, but it got cut off in the image). I believe that this student interest survey will help me better understand my students and in the future, this can help me create a welcoming environment in which I am truly familiar with my students.
