This week, I collected data from Words Their Way, science assessments, and spent a lot of time writing observations in my data notebook. After my teacher administered Words Their Way spelling test, I analyzed the data and found that some of my students are still in the within word pattern stage while others are past the derivational relations stage and need to be tested on the next level spelling words. This is a wide range of spelling groups within the class, which affects their reading and writing as well so it is good to keep in mind with language arts. I compared the science assessment to the math assessment (both based on fourth grade knowledge) and noticed that almost every student scored dramatically higher in science than math. This shows me that my students did not retain their math knowledge from fourth grade. I also wrote data in my notebook about conversations and observations I made during the past couple days.
After talking with my partner, I realized that I need to be collecting more data on my students’ reading because my wondering is leaning towards reading comprehension. My wondering so far is: How can I increase my students’ reading comprehension by integrating collaborational learning? By gathering this data, I will be able to see where my students are starting before I begin to integrate my collaboration strategies. I will need to gather much more data through diagnostic assessments, comprehension questions, and R.P. tests records in the upcoming weeks.
