In these six weeks I have been in the classroom, I have collected data based on reading comprehension. This includes A.R. results, FAIR word knowledge and comprehension tasks, big ideas from texts we read in class, mid-term progress reports, and observations during lessons. I have discussed my data in previous blogs, and I now have noticed themes emerging from these collections. Only four out of my seventeen students said they like reading and I noticed this attitude in my observations as well. Also, 50% of my students received “Below Level” on their mid-term progress report for reading. Therefore, a big theme I see is that my students are not enjoying reading independently, but they like to discuss their reading with their classmates and it improves their understanding of texts during lessons. Another big theme is that my students are getting very poor scores for reading comprehension with their A.R. and FAIR results, along with struggling when finding the main idea in class texts. My final and most obvious theme is that my students sit in rows and do not participate in group activities. They spend the majority of their day listening to direct instruction and I have noticed that it makes them very antsy.
I feel very strongly about collaborative learning, so this led me to my wondering. I believe that group work and discussions promote higher order thinking and creative ways to looking at a situation. I feel like my students are at a disadvantage when they are not able to express and discuss their ideas with their peers. On that note, I have formed the wondering: “How can I incorporate collaborative learning to improve my students’ reading comprehension?” I will continue to collect data based on comprehension and gather articles related to this wondering. I am looking forward to collecting data and findings after implementing my new strategies with my fifth graders.
