In class, we were asked to free write for three minutes about our classroom management philosophy. We had to relate it to assertive discipline, cooperative discipline, or beyond discipline, based on the articles we read in the previous weeks. I sided with Linda Albert’s cooperative discipline, because I believe in working together with my students and teaching the 3 Cs as well: “Helping all students feel capable, helping them connect with others, and helping them make contributions to the class and elsewhere” (Charles, 2002, p. 74). We then created a sculpture based on our type of discipline and this is what I chose to create:

After observing my classmates’ comments, it is clear that there was a distinct connection between my model and my peers’ words. I noticed this because there was a common theme of “teacher-student relationship” and the words “caring” and “love,” which were all ideas that I was thinking while creating this sculpture. I learned that my peers also have this idea of working together and creating these teacher-student relationships with their students as well. I also learned that my philosophy of management is tied very closely to Linda Albert’s cooperative discipline because I strive to create a genuine classroom community where my students have choices and are allowed to work together to create the classroom environment. This helps me as I go into my classroom this week and every week after because I am now aware of my management style, and I can begin to strengthen it while also bringing in the other types of discipline at appropriate times as well.
