Science Investigation- What's density got to do with it?

My fifth graders were learning about physical properties of matter in a science unit and it was my job to find a hands-on lesson that would engage them in the inquiry process. I chose to use the 5 Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) to investigate density and buoyancy specifically. Here are the materials needed for all of the 5 Es:

We began with an inquiry about how a ping-pong ball and a golf ball would act differently in water. Once they discovered this, they moved on to a group investigation about the density of different liquids. Here is a picture of them recording their data:

After completing all of the 5 Es in a three-day investigation, we finished the lesson with an interactive game where the students discussed their answers with their groups. I was able to see how well my fifth graders understood the key terms discussed in the lesson and everyone was fully engaged in this hands-on inquiry process.
